It's our way to tell you how much we love you and how much we care about you.

Get well, don't give up and look forward. There is a life out there waiting for you.

With all our best and love.

Sonia

I hope I did express what you would have liked to say to Nathalie. Would you would like to add something and share it with us? Feel free to post a comment. This is your time, your place, your tribune.

Thank you So Much: Can I say Something Else? Sure I Can

Together we have raised $5,126 to help offset the costs of Nathalie's medical bills.

Big up's to you....
"There are just not enough words out there to express the gratitude I have for you our contributors. You have helped transform Nathalie's tears and pain into smiles and hope and I couldn't asked more! When I was setting up the fundraiser, an amount of a couple of hundred dollars was a far fetched dream. Three short days later that dream became a reality and I honestly can't stop pinching myself since then. My helplessness when witnessing Nathalie's misery was replaced by helpfulness and YOU guys made it possible.

The whole month, I never in my wildest dreams thought that things would move as far as they did. I am shocked, and entirely humbled by the generosity of the community that I am beyond fortunate enough to be part of... I know I said it already... but let me say it again: THANK YOU so, so much! Big up's to you. You have made ZapCancer a success. You have been marvelous...so generous. You are beyond amazing and I am, and always will be, beyond thankful!

Forever your friend,

Sonia Leclerc (Campaign Organizer)"

Nathalie Got Mail!

One of the cool things about fundraising online is that contributors can make their donation in an easy and friendly manner.

Everyone has a preference... by phone, online, instant messaging or from their cell phones and even by mail. Believe it or not some wonderful
contributors just did it and they did it today. Nathalie got mail.

This is such an exciting moment of the day, walking to the mail box and get your mail. It's even more exciting when you open it and you can't believe what you are looking at. Some people know how to make big surprises. When I say big I mean BIG!

Nathalie just emailed me telling me what the big surprise is about. Another amazing friend of her made a gift. What's really exciting about this donation is that YES! you just guessed it and you were right... It brings our total to $5076. We just surpassed our goal and I am just literally blown away. This is beyond amazing. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Now I can be real LOUD!

What a day! Two Tsunamis: One in Japan and One in Nathalie's life

A very special thought for all those affected by the disaster in Japan. It's horrible. Also a little thought for Nathalie who is leaving her job today.

When I compare the two cases I think they have a lot in common. Both are devastating, tragic and mean loss: loss of life, financial loss, damages to the immediate environment (family, health, economy) and in both cases it will take a long time to recover.

But most importantly the two of them need help. You know what? Help is on it's way and guess what? For both or them. Thanks for thinking of them....

Nathalie is Going On Disability Leave: Sad but Necessary!

Nathalie is going on disability leave
Last week, her doctor and the nurses were all shocked that Nathalie was still working and Nathalie didn’t understand why. This week, she does. “Well, I survived my first week at work after the tough chemo treatment. I thought I would not survive. First, the nausea kicked in and then, fatigue”. I hope tomorrow, I will feel better. I hardly ate today. The nightmare is on”. Nathalie will be undergoing treatment for a minimum of eight more weeks and the side effects will be getting worse with each treatment.

On the California state disability plan, she will continue to receive about two-thirds of her current income. For cancer patient disability leave usually means taking some time off for cancer treatment and then come back to work. But there is no coming back to work for Nathalie. Her contract is ending up next month.
For the past couple of weeks Nathalie has been debating if she should or not go on disability.
"On one hand I feel like if I have this perfectly acceptable reason to take time off work I should take it and on the other hand I feel guilty about wanting to be away from work.
I am having a really rough week emotionally. On my way home on Monday, I decided that it is absolutely unrealistic to continue working and do this chemo treatment. This is only the first week and I struggle to gather my energy and keep away the nausea.
I made the difficult decision to go on disability, even though I have one more month left to my contract. It was one of the hardest email to write and I had my load of tears and shame flowing in after I sent the email.
Today and Friday, I have my afternoon loaded with medical appointments; therefore, I have two half-days left to my contract. Today, I enjoyed my last meal at the work cafeteria. I work in a company that has a stellar reputation for its food quality. I remember the very first day I ate at my company’s. Never, in my wildest dreams, I thought I would work here one day.
Even when I was part of the cancer support group, a woman once told me her grandson was a chef at my company. At the time, I was unemployed and I remembered the group leader told us: “Well, with all our cancers, no one will ever work in such great company.” I proved them wrong. I wish I would leave proud and my chest sticking out. I wish I would leave for another great company with an exciting opportunity awaiting me. Instead, I am heading to a string of hospital and doctor appointments. I am heading home to be on disability. And yes, I feel like a failure". said Nathalie
Nathalie’s last day is tomorrow Friday.

How Much Does It Cost for Nathalie to Have Cancer?

How much is it to have cancer?
One question that I am sure you all want to ask about Nathalie's cervical cancer. "How much is it costing her to have cancer?". Today after talking to Nathalie we decided to share with you my readers an idea of what Nathalie's cervical cancer really cost.

We all hear that cancer is big business, involving expensive treatment. Yup! Cancer can be a costly illness. It can take a toll on your health, your emotions, your time, your relationships - and your wallet. Those with no health insurance may have extra worries when facing such a serious and expensive disease.

But it turns out that having insurance is no guarantee that you will be protected for major, life-changing expense if you have cancer. In fact, most bankruptcies that happen as a result of medical problems are filed by people who have health insurance.

Keep in mind that even the best health insurance won't cover all your health costs. Although the picture may be changing as health insurance reform goes into effect, it is likely that out-of-pocket costs will remain a burden for many people with cancer. Keep in mind that this is since 2006 when Nathalie was diagnosed with pre-cervical cancer. Most of the treatment was provided at the Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz.

From 2006 up to March 2011
*Actual
  • Total cost of care billed:  $162,640.82
  • Total paid by insurance: $72,812.84
  • Total paid by patient: $16,904.83

  • Total cost of  personal health insurance paid by patient: $45,123.00
From March 2011 to May 2011
*Forecast (second round of chemo) based of first treatment of radiation and chemo received from September 2010 to December 2011
  • Total paid by patient: $4000.00
1) Total (actual and forecast) paid by patient: $20,904.83
2) Total cost of personal health insurance paid by patient: $45,123.00

Total sum of all heath care cost paid by patient (1+2): $66,027.83
*Includes:
  • Doctor visits
  • Clinic visits for treatments
  • Procedures (for diagnosis or treatment, which can include room charges, equipment, doctors, pathologists, and more)
  • Lab tests (blood tests, urine tests, and more)
  • Imaging tests (such as x-rays, CT scans, MRIs, which may include radiologist fees, equipment, or medicines)
  • Radiation treatments (implants, external radiation, or both)
  • Drug costs (inpatient, outpatient, prescription, and procedure-related)
  • Hospital stays (which can include many types of costs such as drugs, tests, and procedures as well as nursing care, doctor visits, and consultations)
  • Surgery (anesthesiologist, operating room fees, equipment, surgeon, pathologist, and more)
Nathalie says " I think we can agree that $162,640.82 is a lot of money! If you add the amount I paid to the amount that insurance paid, you'll see that the cancer centers received about 55% of what they billed. In some cases, insurance paid all of the billing. In most cases, they paid 50-70%. In a few cases, I have no idea how the provider is able to operate, as insurance paid only 15% of the billed amount!

Cancer treatment is expensive
for the patient

On top of that Nathalie received last Friday a bad news. As of May 1st, 2011, there will be an increase in the monthly fee she is being charged for her health insurance. The health insurance will charge $197/month more on top of the monthly $1087, therefore a fee increase of 18.1%

No matter what, treatment is expensive for the patient. As if the shock of a cancer diagnosis is not enough, it's easy to see how a patient can end up financial devastated by treatment costs.

Looking to Say Thanks: Nathalie Gives Thanks by Giving Back

Two simple words "Thank you"
To find the perfect way to say these two simple words "Thank You" can sometimes be a very endless daunting thing to do. But Nathalie found out her way to simply put these two words together. There is no better way to give thanks than to give back.

Nathalie is the owner of a small greeting card company "Notes and Photos". To thank all of you for your contribution to ZapCancer, Nathalie is offering to a lucky winner randomly selected amongst  the contributors a package of 25 personalized greeting cards from " Notes and Photos" site.

Nathalie's company site
Take a look at "Notes and Photos" and I am sure you can already think of a loved one you would like to send a sweet note to. There is a great selection of cards from different categories you can choose from. Further more, you have one year to claim your prize.

I personally wish you can enjoy this gift by sending a note to a loved one as your way to give back.

I also thought to share with you this inspiring deceptively simple 3-minute talk, Dr. Laura Trice muses on the power of the magic words "thank you" - to deepen a friendship, to repair a bond, to make sure another person know what they mean to you. Try it.

No doubt about it: Our society is celebrity-obsessed. Celebrities are increasingly putting the spotlight on health issues.  A number of them take health causes close to their hearts. But who's putting their fame to good use? If you really want to know CLICK HERE.

When someone famous goes public with a health concern, people are more inclined to look for details on their disease. If that's true are you going to watch all these videos?

First day: But not the first time of chemo for Nathalie

Nathalie at the hospital
receiving her first of second round of chemo
Today was the first day of chemo for Nathalie. The treatment took much longer than expected. It started at 8:30am and it was over only at 3pm. Nathalie said:" I am totally exhausted". The drug was injected to her body non stop during the whole time. Even if it seems very difficult at first, the best thing to do the first day of a chemo treatment is trying to be in a very positive mindset. Despite what the word "chemo" vehicle, consider this drug as your best friend to get out of this rough patch.

Nathalie also told me that she isn't feeling the nausea yet. The thing with chemo is that the first treatment is not the most difficult one. What makes it very difficult is the cumulative treatment one after the other one with all the side effects that come with it.

Nathalie received her treatment in a room for herself. She thought the chemo would be given in a big room with many people and was nicely pleased that it wasn't the case. One bad surprise on the first day at the hospital is the fact the they dont provide free meals anymore. What a surprise for Nathalie who expected to get a meal as usual. She got a little dry sandwich for the whole day and left the hospital starving.

After that long day Nathalie got back home and glad that the day was over. The first chemo treatment is now one thing that Nathalie can leave behind with no regrets. Eight more weeks to go and Nathalie can start thinking about a new chapter of her life. The return to a normal life.

You can also read Nathalie's blog to get more details about her long day at the hospital.

Next Round Of Chemotherapy: Starting Tomorrow Friday 4th

Starting Tomorrow Friday March  4th
Nathalie will receive her second
chemotherapy treatment

Tomorrow Friday, Nathalie will start a second round of chemo treatment. She will have to stay at the hospital for as long as six hours per day to receive her treatments. Nathalie has two options. The first one, the chemo will either be given two weeks in a row  (1st week with two drugs given over a period of 4 hours, 2nd week with one drug given over a period of 30 to 60 minutes and 3rd week as a break ) or all the doses given in one week and one week off. Nathalie says: " I would rather be on the latter schedule. This means I can be done in 3 months instead of 5."

Nathalie will go through a very difficult time. To better understand all the side effects and what she is going to cope with, I invite you to watch the following animated videos. These vignettes help answer questions you might have about cancer and treatment, and the side effects such a nausea, vomiting, hair loss, loss of friends and the return to a normal life. Intended for a young audience I thought everybody would like to watch it.

Nathalie Lost Her Job: A Blow To Her Health Too

Nathalie's contract ending
April 2011.
Wednesday we were all watching non stop our corporate emails. Some waiting for their good and others waiting for the bad. I was glancing at Nathalie. She was starring at her emails and finally she got it - We are sorry to inform you that your contract is not extended. Nathalie was in shock and devastated. She was seriously affected by the bad news. Based on company needs and not on performance some people didn't get their contract extended. Nathalie always exceeded expectations and thought that it would have an impact on the decision making. Obviously it didn't.

Join the ranks of the unemployed is not exactly a feel-good event. You don't need a study to tell you that. Nathalie says:"I lost one pound since last week, I lost a tiny bit in white cell count number, I lost my appetite, I lost my job and I lost my good spirit that helped me keep going through this cancer journey".

Nathalie's struggle with the medical bills is obviously more important than before. On top of that some studies found that loosing a job triggers serious physical and physiological illness. Nathalie is starting her second round of chemo therapy Friday March 4th at Dominican Hospital located in Santa Cruz.

On her blog she says: " This week was particularly tough, especially on the emotional side. I have been fed up about a lot of things: the continuous nausea, the weird radiation side effects, the weight gain struggle, the difficulty to maintain my red cell count at a normal rate, the numerous medical appointments and work. I am tired of feeling ill, tired to not being appreciated for who I am really, tired about a lot of things.I know I have to find motivation for going through the next round of chemo. This will be the most difficult challenge to overcome. If, at least, I would have a glimpse of hope somewhere…"

A challenge is the opportunity for greatness. I now challenge each of you to do something good.By supporting Nathalie you contribute to: Boost Nathalie's moral, lift up her spirit, give her positive energy, make her life better and teach her kids that life and people are the most important things.

ZapCancer is one of a kind of opportunity to do all of it. Are you ready to take that wonderful opportunity? If so you are just one click away. If not you are missing out - Big time!
